The Things That Earned Permanent Spots on Our Beach Packing List

Three Types of Sunscreen

If I could only share one packing tip, it would be this: don't rely on just one type of sunscreen. For a week we packed spray (3 bottles), lotion (1 bottle), and stick (3) sunscreen, and by the end of the trip I was convinced all three deserve a spot in the beach bag.

Lotion sunscreen for adult face protection. It was perfect before leaving the house each morning because it gave us the most thorough coverage.

Spray sunscreen made applying and reapplying the kids quick once we were already at the beach and trying to get two kids back into the water before they lost patience.

Stick sunscreen for kid face protection. It ended up being my favorite. It made faces so much easier - especially noses, ears, and cheeks - and I didn't have to worry about sunscreen running into anyone's eyes.

At first I thought bringing all three was excessive. By day two, I realized they each solved a different problem.

The Shibumi Shade

I completely understand the hype now.

We've used traditional beach canopies before, but the Shibumi was in a completely different league.

Instead of wrestling with poles, stakes, and guy lines, it was set up in just a couple of minutes. The shade coverage was also much larger than I expected (we bought the classic size which fits 4-8 people). We had plenty of room for our family, beach bags, snacks, towels, and the growing collection of toys that somehow multiplied throughout the day.

What really sold me, though, was how compact it packed. Beach vacations already require bringing what feels like half your house. The Shibumi folds into a slim carrying bag that takes up far less room than a traditional canopy, which made packing our SUV much easier.

It's one of the few beach products I'd happily buy again.

Swim suits

Putting sunscreen on my 3yo is equivalent to an olympic sport. We love the SwimZip suits for him so we only have to apply sunscreen to face/neck, hands and feet. My 5yo who has a long torso fits well in Primary Shorts and Rash Gaurds. The mesh in the shorts is super soft, no chafing.

These were worth every penny.

The sand got surprisingly hot during the afternoon, and there were plenty of shells along the shoreline. My boys wore their water shoes almost constantly, whether they were running to the ocean, walking through parking lots, or exploring tide pools.

Mesh Shell Bags

This may have been one of the best inexpensive purchases we made before vacation.

Each kid had their own mesh shell bag to collect treasures throughout the week. The sand fell right through the bag instead of coming home with us, and everyone could carry their own collection without dragging around a bulky bucket.

It also cut down on the inevitable arguments over whose shell belonged to whom.

A Cheap Pop-Up Laundry Hamper

This was the surprise MVP. The little collapsible hamper became command central for the entire week.

Wet swimsuits, sandy towels, dirty clothes...everything went into one place instead of ending up in piles around the bedrooms.

When it was time to do laundry, it was easy to carry downstairs and back up. When it was time to pack up, it easily folds up and fit in a tote. For something that costs very little, it made a huge difference.

Insulated Water Bottles

I had saved our Camelback bottles and of course when we were using them in the car they started leaking. So we had to purchase these while there. Honestly I chose them since they were cheap (under $20) and knew they'd get tossed around in the beach bag.

Having insulated water bottles meant we always had cold water waiting after hours in the sun, and we avoided constantly buying bottled drinks.

We purchased a pack of bottled water and quickly realized that wasn't enough to supply 2 adults and 2 kids for a week unless we all wanted to get dehydrated. The Brita is always a lifesaver and we added one to our Target food order.

Extra Bath Towels

Our rental provided bath towels, but I was still glad we packed a few of our own.

With four people showering after long days at the beach, towels were constantly drying or waiting for another load of laundry. Having a few extras meant we never had to think about whether someone had a dry towel available.

It was one of those small conveniences that made vacation feel a little less hectic.

Your Own Pillow and a Sleeping Bag Liner Sheet

This was one of those items I debated mentioning without it making me sound like a germaphobe, but just hear me out. No one sleeps the same on vacation and it's mostly mental. The liner allowed me to sleep without socks which means I slept waaaay better. Even the cheap pillow from Ikea was clutch. Yes I know they clean the sheets and pillowcases, but still. Anything that helps me feel more comfortable is worth buying.

Things We Wish We'd Packed

Nail Clippers and Tweezers

This sounds oddly specific, but necessary because my son got a splinter in his toe and we had to borrow my SIL's. Both are tiny, weigh almost nothing, and will definitely be added to my first aid bag.

Final Thoughts

As a working mom, I'm always looking for products that remove friction from everyday life, and vacations are no different.

The less time I spend wrestling with beach gear, hunting for towels, or figuring out where to put sandy swimsuits, the more time I actually get to enjoy being with my family.

Looking back, it wasn't the expensive purchases that made the biggest difference. It was the practical ones: having the right sunscreen for the situation, packing familiar bedding for the kids, keeping dirty laundry contained, and bringing gear that was genuinely easy to carry and set up.

We'll definitely tweak our packing list before our next Outer Banks trip, but every item on this list has earned a permanent place in our beach vacation routine. Hopefully it helps make your family's trip just a little easier, too.
