The Morning Routine That Actually Works (Because It Starts the Night Before)

The Morning Routine That Actually Works (Because It Starts the Night Before)

I used to think I needed a better morning routine.

Wake up earlier.

Be more disciplined. Do more before the kids got up.

None of that stuck.

What actually worked was way less dramatic: I stopped trying to fix my mornings and started setting them up the night before.

The Night Before: A Quick Reset That Changes Everything

After dinner, I do a short reset. Not a full clean, not perfection, just enough to make the next morning easier.

  • Clear off the counters

  • Load, run and unload the dishwasher (no pre-scrubbing with these pods)

  • Run the robot vacuum (hands down, my favorite one)

That’s it.

The goal isn’t a spotless house. It’s waking up to a space that doesn’t immediately stress you out.

Because if you walk into a messy kitchen first thing, you’re already playing catch-up.

Morning: My 20–30 Minute Head Start

I get up before the kids, usually between 6-630am. Not for a full routine, just for breathing room.

If I Can: Move My Body

Some days it’s a real workout (peloton barre is my go to). Other days it’s a stretch. I don’t overthink it. Even a few minutes helps me feel like I’ve started the day on my terms.

Open Up the House

This is always my first real “task.” Open the blinds Turn on a few lights It sounds minor, but it instantly makes the house feel awake.

Do the Small Things That Make Mornings Easier

Before the kids are up, I knock out a few quick things that prevent chaos later:

These take maybe five minutes total, but they eliminate the usual back-and-forth once everyone is downstairs.

Then I Get the Kids

This is where the whole routine pays off. We get dressed upstairs, come down together, and walk into a kitchen that’s ready. Breakfast just… happens. No scrambling. No multitasking. No trying to do five things at once while managing kids.

Why This Works (Without Feeling Like “A System”)

I’m not doing more. I’m just doing a few things earlier.

That’s it.

No complicated routines. No 5am wakeups. No pressure to do everything perfectly.

Just removing the things that usually slow me down.

If You Want to Try This

Don’t overhaul your whole routine. Tonight, just do this:

  • Run the dishwasher

  • Clear the counters

  • Run the robot vacuum

Tomorrow morning:

  • Wake up 20 minutes before your kids

  • Prep drinks and do a quick reset

You’ll feel the difference immediately.

The Bottom Line

A smoother morning isn’t about being more productive.

It’s about making a few small decisions earlier so your future self doesn’t have to.

And once you have a morning where everything just flows, it’s really hard to go back.
