The Sunday Reset

The Sunday Reset

There is a direct correlation between how chaotic my Sunday feels and how survivable my Monday morning becomes.

As a working mom with two little preschool age kids, I’ve accepted that I’m never going to become one of those people who spends six uninterrupted hours meal prepping in matching glass containers. That version of adulthood does not exist in my house. Not even in the pre-kid version.

What does exist is a realistic Sunday reset that helps future me function without immediately spiraling by 7:42am on Monday.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about managing the annoying tasks that never go away.

The goal is simple: make the next five days require fewer decisions.

What Is a Sunday Reset?

A Sunday reset is basically preventative maintenance for your life.

Not deep cleaning.
Not turning your house into a Pinterest showroom.
Not “getting ahead” of motherhood because honestly that’s not a thing.

It’s a short list of systems that make the week run smoother:

  • less scrambling

  • fewer forgotten things

  • fewer “what’s for dinner”

  • fewer moments where everyone is yelling while you search for a missing sneaker

The older my kids get, the more I realize routines matter less because they’re aesthetically pleasing and more because my brain simply cannot hold 4,000 loose ends at once.

My Realistic Sunday Reset Routine

1. Reset the Kitchen First

Nothing makes Monday morning feel more aggressive than waking up to a dirty kitchen.

My Sunday night non-negotiables:

  • Run AND unload the dishwasher [this alone saves my morning sanity]

  • Wipe counters

  • Toss expired food from the fridge

  • Restock supplies (soap dispenser, paper towel, kleenex)

  • Run Rosie the robot vacuum before bed

2. Check the Calendar Like a Project Manager

Motherhood is basically middle management with snacks.

Every Sunday I look at:

  • school events

  • work meetings

  • travel

  • anything requiring forms, money, snacks, themed clothing, or emotional resilience

If I don’t look ahead, the week runs me instead of the other way around.

This step alone reduces at least 50% of my stress because surprises are what destroy working parent logistics.

3. Prep the Things That Cause Morning Chaos

I don’t fully meal prep because I know myself.

But I do prep the things that tend to derail mornings:

  • water bottles

  • milk cups

  • lunchbox components

  • fruit washed and accessible

  • easy breakfast options in the freezer

  • workout clothes hanging on the closet door ready to grab while half asleep

  • school bags on hooks labeled for the day

The less thinking required before 8am, the better.

Future me is extremely grateful when past me spent 15 minutes being responsible.

4. Do a Quick House Reset (Not a Deep Clean)

This is where I think social media has broken everyone’s brains a little.

You do not need to deep clean your entire house every Sunday.

You need maintenance.

I focus on:

  • putting things back where they belong

  • clearing floor clutter

  • laundry catch-up

  • bathroom wipe-downs

  • replacing towels

  • vacuuming high-traffic areas

The goal is to stop the house from snowballing by Wednesday.

That’s it.

5. Plan 3–4 Easy Dinners

I’m not creating a gourmet meal plan over here.

I just need enough structure so I’m not standing in front of the fridge at 5:17pm wondering if shredded cheese counts as dinner.

My strategy:

  • 1 super easy meal

  • 1 pasta meal

  • 1 breakfast for dinner night (especially when husband is travelling)

  • 1 leftovers night

  • 1 “figure it out” night

Realistic systems work better than aspirational ones.

6. Reset Myself Too

This is the part I ignored for years.

A Sunday reset isn’t just about the house.

It’s also:

  • washing my hair

  • tidying my nightstand

  • sitting quietly for ten minutes before another week starts

  • my favorite eye masks

Tiny things help me feel less like I’m being launched into Monday against my will.

The Biggest Lesson I’ve Learned About Resets

A successful reset is not the one where everything gets done.

It’s the one that makes the next day easier.

That mindset shift changed everything for me.

Because as working moms, we’re already carrying enough invisible tabs open in our brains at all times. The reset isn’t about becoming more productive. It’s about creating enough breathing room to survive the week with slightly less chaos.

And honestly? Sometimes “slightly less chaos” is the win.

My Most-Used Sunday Reset Favorites

Here’s what genuinely helps my reset routines run smoother each week:

  • Robot vacuum for overnight floor resets

  • Espresso machine because Monday requires caffeine

  • Motion sensor lighting for easier early mornings

  • Laundry baskets in multiple rooms

  • Shared digital calendar

Final Thought

The Sunday reset isn’t about becoming the perfect mom.

It’s about making Monday less punishing.

And at this stage of life? That’s more than enough.
